If you’ve been hanging around YFC for any length of time, you may already know Tim Smyth! He has shifted within our organization and is now the Church Engagement Coordinator. He describes his new role as his “dream job.” Tim LOVES to pray, believes that God can do amazing work through prayer, and is always the person bringing us back to a heart of prayer over every situation, every ministry site, every relationship. A long-time pastor in Pierce County, his experience and his obvious heart for those in ministry leadership opens doors to new relationships.
We asked Tim about his life and his new role. Here’s what he had to say:
What are you excited about in your new role?
Tim: The older I get, the more I am convinced that prayer really does change the world. It is through partnering with the Holy Spirit by prayer that is going to bring revival to this generation. To be used by Christ to encourage churches to rise up and call on Him is a tremendous privilege.
Why YFC?
Tim: I love the faithfulness of YFC to reach youth with the power of the gospel! I have experienced firsthand how impactful YFC ministry can be. I was serving as an Associate Pastor in a church that helped with a Campus Life Club. It was incredible to be part of a ministry that was literally exposing hundreds of lost kids to the gospel. The impact our small church had through partnering with YFC was far beyond anything we could have done on our own. I wanted to be part of a ministry that has those kinds of results in helping build His kingdom.
What’s the best book you’ve read lately?
Tim: Gently and Lowly by Dane Ortlund
Besides Jesus, your family, etc., what’s something you love/are passionate about? Or a hobby you have?
Tim: The Mariners and Christmas season
Is a hot dog a sandwich?
Tim: Absolutely not! (He did not elaborate, but his opinion was swift and final.)
We can’t imagine a more perfect fit for this role! One of our characteristics of fruitful and sustainable ministry sites through YFC is widespread prayer. This position is designed to mobilize the body of Christ to pray, encourage, and come alongside pastors and youth pastors, and raise awareness of our vision so that more adults will be connected in authentic, Christ-sharing relationships with 11-19 year-olds in our community. Bottom line: more prayer means more of God working: more volunteers, more ministry sites, more kids meeting Jesus!
We have a vision for a movement of young people falling in love with Jesus and becoming lifelong followers of Him. We hope to do this by engaging over 30 churches to coordinate a monthly prayer time for youth in Pierce County within their church bodies. Tim is already partnering with over 20 church bodies to engage in monthly prayer for the young people of Pierce County.
If you think your church would be interested in joining the movement, please contact Tim Smyth at tim@tacomayfc.org.
