Raylene Swanger, One80 Mentorship Program Coordinator, prays over every case that comes through. This time she heard God say clearly, “Do not close this case.”
When Nathan* was referred to the program, only one volunteer was available to mentor him. This mentor is really great, but perhaps not the best fit for Nathan, an interesting kid with a love of playing music and a need for adventure that can get him into trouble.
Before Raylene could make the connection, Nathan was on the run. He bounced in and out of his house and was not motivated to connect when he was home. The One80 program is for youth involved in the juvenile justice system, but it’s voluntary. Youth can choose other ways to meet the requirements of their diversion program or parole.
Raylene made attempt after attempt and kept communication open with Nathan’s guardian, his aunt. She continued to pray and God continued to answer: Do not close this case.
A few months later, Bill signed up to be a mentor. As Raylene got to know Bill, she saw commitment to the Lord, his ability to shepherd, learned about his life experiences, and realized he could be the perfect mentor for Nathan.
At that same time, Nathan was returning from time in a support center where he was able to work out some of the things that had been troubling him. He was ready for a mentor.
Nathan’s mom said that after Bill and Nathan’s first meeting, Nathan was in a great mood the next day. He woke up happy. After a setback, Bill was right there with encouragement and truth for Nathan.
After their mentorship relationship started, Nathan had been beaten up by the kids he’d been spending time with. His aunt had been praying for “good kids and good guides” he could connect with. Bill got in touch with a youth pastor who has been picking Nathan up and taking him to church. He’s been several times and keeps going back.
Bill and Nathan’s relationship continues to flourish. Raylene is grateful she listened to God’s voice and trusted Him to make things happen when the time was right.
Raylene has story after story of God lining up the perfect relationships. The One80 mentors are a diverse group, with people ranging from their early 20’s to their 60’s. Some are business leaders, some retired, some just starting out in their careers. What unites them is their love of Jesus and their compassion for others.
Do you have about an hour a week to devote to the support of a young person in our community? You could be just the right person at just the right time for a kid looking for hope.
