Several months ago, Covid-19 upended our existence. Work changed drastically and social norms and easy rhythms became fraught with uncertainty. Then came the struggles over racial inequality and the call to examine our policies, our country, and our own lives. We wonder, will we ever be able to hug our elderly loved ones again? Will we ever be able to have honest conversations where anger and confusion are both acceptable?
As I reflect on the uncertainties of my own life, I am also drawn to think about the complexities that military-connected teens now face. “Will I ever be able to really hang out with my friends again? Will I have to study from home in the fall? Will we move this summer, or not? Will I be able to visit my parent in another state? Will my dad get pulled over when he’s driving to come pick me up?”
With all of this uncertainty, where is the certainty to balance it all out? The certainty is this: God can and will accomplish His will.
Case in point: Ruby started coming to Campus Life Military after COVID-19 shut down schools. Our team began a relationship with her during lunches back in December, but she never came to one of our clubs in the school. After school closed, Ruby got a post-card inviting her to follow us on Instagram. Through that touch, point Ruby started coming to some events on Zoom. A few weeks back we were scared we had lost her because she left a Zoom call during our talk about Jesus in club online. But after a few weeks she resurfaced.
Ruby recently told us she would be going away for a month to visit her dad in another state. If ministry were as it used to be, we would probably lose all contact. But in Ruby’s words, “I’m just going to tell my dad that I’ve got to use the computer every Wednesday from 12-1PM!” Our leaders hope to continue building the relationship, even from afar. And the ability to start and continue this relationship is all the work of God during uncertain times.
He is certain. He is stable. The Lord will accomplish His will to reach lost 11-19 year-olds no matter what the circumstances.
